Build confidence, fill knowledge gaps, and work towards a recognised qualification with our Functional Skills Maths Preparation Tutoring Courses.

What are Functional Skills?

Functional Skills assess the fundamental skills of English and Maths and help to prepare people with the skills that they may need in their working and professional lives.

There are different levels of Functional Skills Qualifications:

  • Entry Level 1

  • Entry Level 2

  • Entry Level 3

  • Level 1

  • Level 2

  • Entry-level 1-3 is below GCSE level.

  • Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE grades 1-3.

  • Level 2 is comparable to GCSE grade 4.

Once learners have completed and passed their first Functional Skills Qualification, they can progress onto the next level. After Level 1 and 2 learners can choose to study further, with the options of taking GCSE, or progress into employment or vocational training.

All courses follow the official DfE Functional Skills Maths curriculum, preparing you to sit your Level 1 or Level 2 exam.

Functional Skills Maths Level 1 – Course Overview

Focus: Everyday maths for practical use and basic problem-solving.
Designed to show understanding of real-world maths (budgeting, measuring, simple data handling, etc.)

Covers:

  • Number:

    • Whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and percentages

    • Simple ratio and proportion

    • Rounding and estimating

    • Using negative numbers in context (e.g., temperature, money)

    • Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Measure, Shape & Space:

    • Metric units for length, mass, capacity, and time

    • Perimeter, area, and simple volume

    • Reading scales on instruments (rulers, thermometers, measuring jugs)

    • Time calculations (12hr/24hr clock, timetables, durations)

  • Handling Data:

    • Collecting and organising data

    • Reading and interpreting tables, charts, and graphs

    • Averages (mean, median, mode) and range

    • Simple probability (e.g. likely/unlikely, ½ chance, etc.)

  • Problem Solving:

    • Word problems linked to real-life situations (money, travel, shopping, etc.)

    • Showing clear working and reasoning

    • Using a calculator effectively

Exam structure:
Usually two papers – one non-calculator and one calculator.
(Non-calculator = basic arithmetic / reasoning; Calculator = applied problems.)

Functional Skills Maths Level 2 – Course Overview

Focus: Confident, independent use of maths in work, study, and daily life.
More emphasis on multi-step reasoning, problem-solving, and interpreting information.

Covers:

  • Number:

    • Multi-step problems involving fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios

    • Reverse calculations (finding the original number before a percentage increase/decrease)

    • Compound measures (speed, density, unit cost)

    • Order of operations (BIDMAS)

    • Estimation and accuracy (including limits of accuracy)

  • Measure, Shape & Space:

    • Converting between metric and imperial units

    • Perimeter, area, and volume of composite shapes

    • 3D shapes and surface area

    • Using scale drawings and maps

    • Applying formulae (e.g., area of a triangle, circumference of a circle)

  • Handling Data:

    • Interpreting and comparing complex data (dual bar charts, pie charts, scatter graphs)

    • Calculating mean, median, mode, and range from grouped data

    • Understanding correlation

    • Using probability in context (e.g. combined events, probability scale 0–1)

  • Problem Solving:

    • Real-life, workplace-style scenarios requiring multiple steps

    • Interpreting written information and extracting key data

    • Explaining reasoning and showing method clearly

    • Choosing appropriate mathematical methods or tools

Exam structure:
Two papers – non-calculator and calculator. Level 2 questions are longer, often multi-step, and expect full written reasoning.
